What is PILATES ?

The Pilates method is a system of body conditioning that emphasizes strength, muscle tone and flexibility. Pilates incorporates precise, flowing movements from the center of your body: the abdomen, lower back and buttocks. You will feel at once stronger and more agile with improved coordination and balance. As your core strength develops you should experience improved posture and body alignment, and an overall feeling of fitness “from the inside out.”

According to practitioners, the central aim of Pilates is to attempt to create a fusion of mind and body, so that without even engaging the mind, the body will move with economy, grace, and balance.

Just about everyone can benefit from Pilates’ low-impact, high-results training—from athletes to actors, both men and women, young and old. Since Pilates both strengthens and tones while improving flexibility and agility, it is ideal for people from all walks of life.

A little bit of Pilates history

Joseph Pilates (puh-Lah-tees), a gymnast born in Germany of Greek ancestry developed his unique training system in the early 1900s and brought it to the U.S. in the 1930s, after using his method to rehab war victims in WWI. His new method was first called “contrology”. Joseph Pilates believed that the health of the body, mind and spirit are interrelated. Pilates created "The Pilates Principles" to condition the entire body: proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement.

Pilates gained early notoriety when Joseph helped George Balanchine of the New York City Ballet recover from an injury. Today, the Pilates method is a growing, global success with hundreds of certified instructors training world-class athletes, movie stars, moms, men, children…you.

Pilates Benefits

Pilates exercises are designed to strengthen the core by developing pelvic stability and abdominal control. In addition, the exercises improve flexibility and joint mobility and build strength. Pilates corrects improper muscle memory that limits physical ability, cause back pain and can cause injury

By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and complete concentration on smooth, flowing movement, you become acutely aware of how your body feels, where it is in space, and how to control its movement

In a nutshell Pilates changes the way in which we use our bodies. It changes muscle recruitment patterns, correcting common muscle imbalances, restoring good alignment and natural normal movement

These are just some of the benefits of Pilates:

  • greater strength and muscle tone
  • more efficient respiratory, lymphatic and circulatory systems
  • better posture
  • great increase in body awareness
  • a flatter stomach and trimmer waist
