Do I need to start with a private yoga lesson?
Maybe. It really depends on the personality and physical condition of the individual. If you are one that prefers to “be in the know” and is easily frustrated when you don’t have it quite right, it may be wise to start with a private lesson to get a feeling for the flow of a typical yoga class. If you have injuries that you are healing or physical limitations that you will need to work around a private lesson is a wise first step. An individual who can take direction, either verbal or visual and are without physical injury a private lesson is generally not required and you can come to a walk-in class. If you are not sure just call, email or stop by and we will help you make the right choice.
How often should I do yoga?
Any yoga is better than none. Ideally, practice every day for 60 or more minutes. If that is not possible, do what you can--and do not come down on yourself for not doing more. Multiple shorter sessions are better than one long session a week.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever is comfortable for you to work out in. Short shorts or running shorts are not desirable.
Where do I begin?
We recommend that your first Pilates session be a private one. You can familiarize yourself with the Pilates apparatus, get an idea your body’s strengths and weaknesses, and formulate personal goals while asking any questions you may have in a one-on-one setting with the instructor. Once you have done a private session you will be more comfortable with the language and philosophy of Pilates.
How many private Pilates apparatus lessons do I have to take?
After your first private session, it will be up to you and your teacher to decide whether you are ready to move into semi-private lessons (group sessions) or need to take a few more private lessions. Every person comes into our studio with a different background; there’s no single formula for everyone. From our experience, beginners generally take two or three private lessions before moving into semi-private sessions.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever is comfortable for you to work out in, as long as it’s not too baggy. Loose fitting clothing makes it difficult for the instructor to observe your body during the workout. Short shorts or running shorts are not desirable. You don’t need to wear sneakers, but always bring socks.
How many times a week should I do Pilates?
Two to three times a week is a good balance. You can incorporate any of the Pilates sessions into that number (i.e., private or semi-private sessions, tower and mat classes). You will be pleasantly surprised at how well you feel and look after only a few weeks. Remember: consistency is the key to change.
Can I start off by taking Pilates mat classes?
Yes, you can start with a Pilates mat class, as long as you don’t have any major injuries. If you have a serious injury, you should introduce yourself to Pilates by taking a private session.
