PILATES AND YOU
The Pilates method is a system of body conditioning that emphasizes
strength, muscle tone and flexibility. Pilates incorporates precise, flowing
movements from the center of your body: the abdomen, lower back and
buttocks. You will feel at once stronger and more agile with improved
coordination and balance. As your core strength develops you should
experience improved posture and body alignment, and an overall feeling of
fitness “from the inside out.”
Just about everyone can benefit from Pilates’ low-impact, high-results
training—from athletes to actors, both men and women, young and old. Since
Pilates both strengthens and tones while improving flexibility and agility,
it is ideal for people from all walks (runs, and leaps) of life.
Joseph Pilates (puh-Lah-tees) developed his unique training system in the
early 1900s and brought it to the U.S. in the 1930s, after using his method
to rehab war victims in WWI. His new method (first called “contrology”)
gained early notoriety when Pilates helped George Balanchine of the New York
City Ballet recover from an injury. Today, the Pilates method is a growing,
global success with hundreds of certified instructors training world-class
athletes, movie stars…and you.
